For over fifteen years now, Trentino Volley has promoted at least one new talent from its thriving Youth Sector to the men’s first team every season. That tradition continued in the summer of 2025 with Leonardo Gabriel Sandu, who, after progressing through the Trentino academy and playing two seasons in Serie B with the UniTrento Volley project, was called up to the first team.
For the young middle blocker, born in Lazio to Romanian parents, this is a well-earned promotion. In the past season, he was not only a key player for the Junior team (scoring 249 points, including 76 blocks in 26 matches), but he also had the chance to showcase his great potential by regularly training with the first team and even earning a spot on the bench in a couple of official matches.
He’s a physical middle, combining impressive jumping ability with solid attacking technique and significant height at the net. Under the guidance of Marcelo Mendez and alongside elite players in his position like Flavio, Bartha, and Torwie, he’ll have the opportunity to learn and grow significantly.
