Arcada Galati-Trentino Itas 1-3, the match report
Match Chronicle. Trentino Itas presented in Romania with the same lineup that brilliantly concluded the 48th Adige Derby against Verona on Sunday evening; coach Fabio Soli once again chose Rychlicki as the opposite in diagonal to the setter and captain Sbertoli, Michieletto and Lavia acting in position 4, with Flavio and Kozamernik in the middle, and Laurenzano as the libero. C.S. Arcada Galati responded with Costantin as the setter, Rata as the opposite, Kavogo and Marshall as outside hitters, Butnaru and Freimanis in the middle, and Kosinski as the libero. Trentino Itas had a slow start: the Romanians performed well with blocking and serving, taking leads of 3-5 and then 5-8 as Lavia struggled at the net. Trentino's comeback was marked by blocks from Kozamernik and Flavio and a positional fault whistled against the home team; the break allowed Soli's team to take the lead at 14-12. Stancu's timeout was ineffective, as two aces by the Slovenian middle blocker and another block by his Brazilian counterpart brought the score to 17-12, forcing the home team's coach to call another timeout. Upon resumption, Flavio continued to dominate at the net (22-16), making it easy for Trento to manage their substantial lead and take the first set 25-18, with Michieletto closing the set with a successful attack against a triple block.
The good moment for Trentino continued at the start of the second set (immediately 3-1 with Rychlicki standing out), but Freimanis' serve quickly leveled the score at 4. Michieletto pushed ahead again (7-5), but then Butnaru and Marshall helped the Romanians equalize at 8 and then pull ahead to 9-12. Soli called a timeout, but upon resumption, it was again Galati's Canadian hitter who made the difference, pushing the home team to a +6 lead (9-15). Trento did not give up and tried to rebuild their set with Michieletto and Flavio (14-17), then Lavia brought them within two points (18-20); Trentino Itas saw the opponents come ever closer (22-23), but at the very end, they lost contact as Kozamernik was blocked by Freimanis (22-25).
After changing the field Itas Trentino team tried to react: Lavia and Flavio, thanks to a block, took the first significant advantage (5-2, Stancu’s time out). During the upswing, Michieletto gave the best of himself (10-5) but Galati responded with Rata till 13-10. Acquarone’s entry in the game (at service) and Gabi Garcia at the net was a spot-on choice. The setter found a streak of efficient services which led the gialloblù to 21-12; it’s thanks to Michieletto and the opposite hitter, Garcia, quickly settled the score, bringing the guests on 2-1 already in correspondence of 25-16. The monologue performance of the European Champions continued even at the beginning of the next period, which saw Acquarone and Gabi Garcia on the field from the very first switch: just a good rotation of the opposite hitter at the net produced the first relevant advantage (6-1). Arcada Galati team never gave up believing (7-4), then suffered in reception and lost even more contact (10-4). Only after Ionescu’s attacks, the home team began to gain more ground (13-10, 17-14), till 19-18, the exact moment in which Soli stopped the game. In the second half, a breakpoint by Gabi Garcia marked the set (23-20) and the match, which ended 25-22 thanks to an attack by Flavio.
