Some statistics and curiosities emerged after the formalization of the rounds and the schedule of the first phase of the Club World Championship 2016.
DEBUT AGAINST THE ORGANIZING CLUB, AS IN 2012 The debut in the competition will be on Wednesday, October 19th against Minas Tenis Clube, club that organizes the event. It happened before in the edition 2012, the last one won by Trentino Volley, that the Club in via Trener started its own way to the world title against the home team. Then, it was October 13th 2012 and they were playing in Doha, the yellow-blue team confronted the Al-Rayan from Qtar and suffered until the end, winning only at the tie break after being at a disadvantage of 1-2. Such success succeeded in unblocking Trentino Diatec, fresh from two defeats in a row in the first two official matches of the year (2-3 against Macerata in the Italian Super Cup and 1-3 at PalaTrento against Vibo). The team then never gave it a hitch until January 12th 2013 (twenty-six victories in a row, best yellow-blue sequence ever).
GOOD FIRST TAKE IN FIVE CIRCUMSTANCES In the six previous participations at the Club World Championship, the debut had been positive for Trentino Volley in five cases; the team was able to win all the debut matches of that event, except from the edition 2014’s one (defeat 0.-3 against Al-Rayan): the previous positives are related to the 3-1 against Zamalek in the edition 2009, 3-0 against Dinamo Mosca in the 2010 one, 2-0 against Al Ahly in 2011, 3-2 against Al-Rayan in 2012, 3-1 against Kalleh in 2013.
ALREADY SEEN ON OCTOBER 19th… On October 19th 2016, the club World Championship’s debut day of the edition 2016, Diatec Trentino will confront Minas Tenis Clube, exactly four years after the last precedent against a Brazilian team. On the same date in 2012, in Doha, the yellow-blue team defeated Sada Cruzeiro, becoming the World Champion for the fourth consecutive time. A year later, in 2013, on the same date the team lost 1-3 against Novosibirsk, which stopped in the semi-final the path of the team then led by Roberto Serniotti (then bronze medal).
ONLY SOUTH AMERICAN RIVALS IN THE POOL OF THE FIRST PHASE In the group stage of the edition 2016, Trentino volley will confront only rivals from South America: the Brazilian team Minas Tenis Clube in the first match and then the Argentinians of Bolivar and UPCN in the following ones. In the previous Club World Championship editions, the Club in Via Trener faced teams from that continent in six circumstances. Two competitions against Brazilian teams (both won against Sesi San Paolo and Sada Cruzeiro) and four against Argentinian teams (one against Bolivar and even three against UPCN, the only team able to impose a defeat). The overall budget is 5 victories and a defeat.
IN THE POOL B AS IN 2010, 2011 AND 2014 Trentino Volley will play the first phase of the Club World Championship 2016 in the Pool B, like in the edition 2010 (first place prior to Drean Bolivar), 2011 (won ahead of Sesi San Paolo) and 2014 (third place behind Al-Rayan and UPCN and consequent elimination). In the other three years (2009, 2012 and 2013) it was in round A, grouping that only in the last edition didn’t see the yellow-blue team excelling.
