Matteo Chiappa and Max Colaci
ph. Hurrikaani Loimaa
Trento, 7th January 2017
The match played in Finland will be remembered by Trentino Volley not only for the great and important away win against Hurrikaani; on Thursday night another young player from the yellow-blue academy has made his debut in the European Competitions.
The 23-year-old Matteo Chiappa has made his first European appearance taking Filippo Lanza's place during the third set (won 25-20) to strenghten Trentino Volley's back court zone. His debut was unusual; at Loimaan Liikuntahalli he played in the starting six until the end of the match not in his common position as libero but as setter (he played in this role in the yellow-blue academy but also when he played Serie B1, B2 and C championships). This will be an unforgettable experience because Matteo had also the chance to attack some balls, but he did not get direct points.
Chiappa was born in 1993 and comes from Milan, but since he was a child he lived in Trento. He is only the last player who comes from the yellow-blue academy and made his debut on the international stage after playing with all the junior teams. Before him there were Antonio De Paola (the first ever to debut during Trento-Vienna 3-0 on the 10th December 2008), Nicola Leonardi (the first one who gains a point during Trento-Palma di Maiorca 3-0 played the 18th February 2009), Michele Fedrizzi, Lorenzo Gallosti, Michele Morelli, Filippo Lanza, Sebastiano Thei, Gabriele Nelli, Simone Giannelli, Tiziano Mazzone and Carlo De Angelis. Giannelli is still the youngest player in Trentino Volley's history who made his debut in an European Competition, the 19th November 2014 during the CEV Cup match Trento-Novi Sad 3-0, when he was 18 years, 3 months and 10 days old.
