Modena, September 23th 2016

The season of the Italian volleyball 2016/17 begins tomorrow, on Saturday 24th September, with the first trophy: the Del Monte® Italian SuperCup 2016.

The competition has a new formula: the four teams that got the most important European rights will play at PalaPanini (single venue) with the Final Four method, similar in all aspects to the Coppa Italia. Diatec Trentino will play the first semi-final against the Italian champions, the home team Azimut Modena at 4 pm. Live on Radio Dolomiti and live streaming on www.sportube.tv.

HERE DIATEC TRENTINO After almost 50 days of preparation with four friendly matches, the team of Trento is ready to begin the first official weekend of the new sport season, the seventeenth season of all time for Trentino Volley. As fate would have it, the first match is against Modena, against which the season 2015/16 ended (in semi-final playoff) and a match that in 2016 - between regular season, Coppa Italia and Play Off Scudetto - often gave significant and vibrant moments.

In this case, they will play for a place in the final of the Italian SuperCup. Trentino Volley has already won this trophy twice (the last time in 2013) but the team doesn’t have a particular rapport with this event. In order to win a new title and start the new season in the best possible way, the Club relies on trainer Angelo Lorenzetti – adversary with Modena not so long ago. He is the most awaited of the weekend in Modena because this is the first time for him at PalaPanini as former trainer and because the player market of the Club of via Trener gave few changes to the regular 6 players who played during the last season (only Stokr in place of Djuric).

“I’m coping well with the eve of the match because I want to play in an event that has changed compared to the past: it will be more interesting - explains the new trainer of Diatec Trentino -. In my case, I return to a place I enjoyed, therefore I’ll gladly meet again many people. We arrive to this event after working hard in the last weeks and fortunately with all players at my disposal, except for Van de Voorde. We can’t already be orderly and precise, but this normal for my teams in this period of the season. We’ll find a Modena reinforced thanks to the player market with a devastating service, an expert setter, Orduna, and a very good trainer, Piazza. I hope that my team will play two games of high level; we want to reach the final and we did all we could to arrive in our best conditions”.

For his debut with Diatec Trentino, the coach from the Marches will have to do without Van de Voorde (busy with Belgium in the qualifications to Euro 2017) and has just one doubt about the formation, i.e. about the couple of hitters: on the list there are Antonov, Lanza and Urnaut. The training of this afternoon at PalaPanini can give the coach an answer. There are eleven yellow-blue players who have already participated in the Italian SuperCup at least once: Colaci with 5 appearances and two victories, Lanza with four appearances and two victories and Burgsthaler with 3 appearances. Also Stokr, Solé and Urnaut won a SuperCup. This is the first time ever for Blasi and Chiappa.

SEVENTH SUPERCUP FINAL, THE TWENTY-NINTH ONE EVER IN THE HISTORY OF TRENTINO VOLLEY The one of tomorrow night will be the seventh Italian Super Cup final for Trentino Volley, the twenty-ninth one in total considering also seven championship finals, four Champions League finals, one CEV final, six Italian Cup ones and four Club World Championship ones. In this single event, the club in via Trener praises six precedents connected to 2008 edition, when September 20th it lost 3-0 against Lube Banca Marche in Florence, 2010, when September 29th it lost 3-0 against Cuneo in Turin, 2011, when November 1st the team got its revenge (3-1) against the Piedmonteses winning the trophy for the first time in Cagliari, 2012, when September 29th it lost 3-2 against Macerata in Modena, 2013, when October 9th the team got its revenge against Lube winning the second trophy at PalaTrento and 2015, when October 24th it lost 3-2 against Modena at PalaPanini. The balance sheet in the matches that assign a trophy sees the yellow-blue team as victorious in sixteen circumstances out of twenty-eight; the most recent is referred to a match played on May 13th at PalaPanini and won 3-0 against Modena (match 4 in the Championship’s Play Off). Tomorrow Trentino Volley will play the 660th official match: the overall balance sheet is 459 victories and 200 defeats.

THE RIVALS Azimut Modena starts this competition and, more in general, the entire season as the eve’s favourite team, not only for the championship it won after 12 years, but also because it could play the entire competition’s weekend in front of its audience. The Emilian audience will have the opportunity to meet the new team’s face, significantly changed in the bleachers (where now, instead of Lorenzetti, there’s Piazza, former Cuneo and Belluno) and on the field, where we find, in the place of Bruno, the Italian-Argentinian setter Orduna (from Padua) and the powerful Le Roux and Holt in the centre. Once again, the club has set up a team with a greatest level and it could count on top players like the outside hitters Petric (promoted to captain) and Ngapeth, the opposite hitter Vettori and the libero Rossini. As important alternatives, especially as central and in zone 4, Modena could count on Piano and the couple Cook and Massari. In the roster also Swen Ngapeth, the brother of the Azimut’s main point of reference for the attack.

PRECEDENTS Although Modena is the rival that Trentino Volley has challenged the most (62 official matches – 36 victories and 26 defeats), tomorrow’s match will be the second ever in Del Monte® Super Cup. The only precedent was played 11 months ago (October 24th 2015), when Modena won at the tiebreak the single-match challenge at PalaPanini. In 2016 the two teams confronted each other many times; in the calendar year’s first nine months they played six matches (three played in Emilia, two at PalaTrento and one at forum di Assago), 4 of which won by Modena, but only one (of three matches) won at PalaPanini (3-1, Play Off semi-final’s match 1). The last precedent played in Modena (April 21st) was positive for Trento (3-1 in semi-final’s match 3), which won 14 times out of 30 at PalaPanini.

THE REFEREES Fipav has named the six referees who will direct semi-finals and finals, without disclosing the couples’ composition for the single matches (it will be revealed tonight). The nominated referees are Matteo Cipolla (from Palermo), Fabrizio Pasquali (from Ascoli Piceno), Andrea Puecher (from Padua), Daniele Rapisarda (from Udine), Simone Santi (from Città di Castello – Perugia, he directed the last Trento’s precedent in Modena – April 21st 2016) and Armando Simbari (from Milan).

SUPERCOPPA ITALIANA’S HALL OF FAME Saturday in Modena we are going to celebrate the 21st  edition of Supercoppa Italiana. In the hall of fame of this event, Sisley Treviso excels with 7 victories, followed by Cuneo and Macerata with four, Trento and Modena with two and Piacenza with one. The club of via Trener is going to participate for the seventh time in this competition, Modena for the fifth time.
