Trento, January 20th 2018

The nineteenth day of 2017/2018 SuperLega UnipolSai takes place during the weekend after the early game between Latina and Vibo Valentia (3-0); Diatec Trentino will play against Calzedonia Verona in PalaOlimpia in the traditional “Adige derby”, game starting at 6 pm on Sunday, with live streaming on Radio Dolomiti and on Lega Volley Channel at www.elevensports.it/superlega.

Here Diatec Trentino After four consecutive games at home, Yellow-blue team goes to Verona for the first away match of 2018 with the goal of taking home three points, in order to get closer or even overtake Calzedonia Verona for the fourth place in the rank.

“We know our opponent’s worth, as they proved to us in the first leg match (1-3 defeat on November 5th) - explained coach Angelo Lorenzetti -. After that match Verona confirmed their position in the league, showing great continuity in the results, the outcome of effective play both in side out phase and in break points. We expect a though match but to aim high we must win this kind of games, focusing on tactics, technique but also mental mindset. This is the first of many important challenges and it’s important to start off with the right foot.”

In PalaOlimpia Diatec Trentino will have to deal with the absence of libero De Pandis, while Hoag, who suffered a hard contusion to the right shoulder during the warm up training before the match against Lube Civitanova, will undergo further evaluations from the medical staff during the next training sessions. Trentino Volley will play its 739th official match, 448th in regular season, hunting for the 247th away victory.

Seven former Trentino Volley players are playing with Verona In addition to the hype for an important match between two top ranked teams, many former players of both teams will take the court with the opponent’s; most awaited players are Adam Zingel and Uros Kovacevic, both winners of the Challenge Cup with Verona last year, for the first time back in PalaOlimpia as opponents. Also coach Angelo Lorenzetti and his assistant Dante Boninfante worked for Verona, while Nikola Grbic, Emanuele Birarelli and Mitar Djuric are unforgotten part of Trentino Volley history, having won many trophies inside and outside Italy.

The Opponents Calzedonia Verona resisted in the fourth rank during most part of regular season and must now try to repel the attack by Diatec Trentino, a direct pretender. Even if defeated by Modena 3-0 last weekend, Grbic shaped a team which proved solid and consistent: all five defeats happened against teams that are in a better position in the rank. All of this accomplished without the contribution of opposite Mitar Djuric (recovering from physical problems that forced him out for most of the first leg); though Slovenian opposite Stern turned out to be his natural substitute and often resulted best scorer and mvp of his team. In the central part of the first leg, Iranian player Manavi surprised for his continuity and took Maar’s place in the starting six thanks to his high performances. The two middle-blockers Birarelli and Pajenk contribute with their expertise and reliability (Pajenk is the second-best attacker of the league for weighted average); setter Spirito and libero Pesaresi are willing to show off and secure a place in the national team.

The Background Will take place in Verona the 31st official match in the history between the two teams; the so-called Adige Derby has almost always been positive for the yellow-blues colours, which won in twenty-two previous matches. Among the eight victories of the opponents there’s the one obtained in the going round at PalaTrento (on November 5th), when Verona won 1-3 (21-25, 21-25, 25-17, 22-25) with Maar mvp. We have to go back to November 1st 2014 to find a home victory for Calzedonia (3-0 victory in the fourth match of the going round); after that success Diatec Trentino achieved two away victories: a tie break comeback victory on December 8th 2015 and another 3-0 victory on November 9th 2016.

The Referees The matched will be whistled by Simone Santi (from Città di Castello – Perugia, in Serie A from 1994 and international referee Fivb since 2011) and Giorgio Gnani (from Ferrara, in Serie A from 1994 and international referee since 2009). The two referees are at their first match together in SuperLega Unipolsai 2017/18, the twelfth for Santi (who already whistled Trento versus Modena this season on December 3rd) and the thirteenth for Gnani, who already whistled Diatec Trentino this year in occasion of the semi-finals of Supercoppa lost 1-3 versus Perugia in Civitanova (October 7th), of the 3-1 home victory versus Castellana Grotte (October 28th) and of the 3-0 away victory in Frosinone versus Sora (December 13th).
