Trento, March 14th 2017
The second match of the 2017 CEV Cup quarters is scheduled on this evening and on Wednesday. This will be the third home European match of the season for Diatec Trentino, this time against an Italian team: on Wedneday, March 15th at PalaTrento the rival will be Lpr Piacenza, that lost two weeks ago in the first match. The match starts at 8.30 p.m.: live on Radio Dolomiti.
HERE DIATEC TRENTINO The team won the last seven matches among regular season, Play Off and Europe events. Lanza and his teammates wants the access to the third continental semifinal in a row, after the ones in the previous seasons in 2015 CEV Cup and 2016 CEV Champions League. In order to reach such an important goal, which will lead to the fifth semifinal out of fifth seasonal events, the team must win at least two sets and confirm the supremacy, already proven on March, 1st.
“This competition is very important for us, we want to be protagonist until the end in Europe too – stated the coach Angelo Lorenzetti - . Despite what happened in the last match, we know it won’t be easy getting the access to the next turn, also because the regulation doesn’t offer many advantages for a team that won in three sets. However, this is right for the show. Piancenza will be full of energies and will have nothing to lose, we must control the match even if it won’t be easy. Players like Clevenot, Marshall, Hierrezuelo and Hernandez can put us in difficulties.”
Diatec Trentino hasn’t problems with the number of players and will show up with the best starting six, in order to get the 18th consecutive home victory. For the starting six, the coach will have to choose between Stokr and Nellli as opposite hitter and one among Solé, Daniele Mazzone and Simon Van de Voorde will start from the bench. For this occasion, Filippo Lanza will reach Emanuele Birarelli for the number of matches as Captain; the outside hitter grew in the Youth Team of Trentino Volley and will be captain for the 91^ time. Starting from Sunday’s match against Birarelli’s Perugia, there will be only Kazisky (204) ahead Pippo in this ranking.
49^ INTERNATIONAL MATCH AT PALATRENTO On Wednesday evening, the PalaTrento will host the 49^ European home match, the 21^ one in CEV Cup, where it won 17 times (only three defeats; two against Ankara in the 2005 edition and one against Moscow in the 2015 edition). PalaTrento hosted only once an international match between two Italian teams: March 1st, 2012, 3-0 victory against Macerata in the second match of the Playoffs 6 of CEV Champions League. In that occasion, the yellow-blue team got the qualification to the Final Four at the golden set. The Culb in via Trener will play the 703^ official match of its history, the 44^ seasonal one, the 133^ international one (balance sheet: 111 victories and 21 defeats).
THE OPPONENTS After being kicked off from Perugia during Scudetto quarter finals, Lpr Piacenza has now only 2017 CEV Cup to take part in, in a season in which the team reached Coppa Italia semifinals and the sixth place after the regular season of SuperLega. The defeat suffered at home in the first round, first defeat in an international competition this year, will force Piacenza to an unimaginable come back; never this season has a team won against the home team in PalaTrento in less than four sets. It will, though, be necessary if they want to enlarge their palmares of european trophies, which already counts on a Top Team Cup (season 2004/2005) and a Challenge Cup (2012/2013). The team will be able to line up the two foreign players, middle blocker Yosifov and opposite Marshall; with them, the Cuban diagonal Hierrezuelo-Hernandez and wing spikers Marshall and Clevenot will complete the starting six..
TRENTINO DIATEC WILL RANK IN THE SEMIFINALS, IF… The Yellow-blue must win two sets in Wednesday’s evening match to pass the round; thanks to the success achieved in the home match for 3-0 (sets of 25-19, 25-23, 25-21), Lanza and his team mates will in fact be able to lose even at the tie break to avoid the hypothetical golden set against Piacenza, that will be played only in case of victory of the team from Emilia in four sets. The rules are identical to those used in the Playoffs 12 of CEV Champions League. The team that passes the round, will face the winner between Fenerbahce and Ajaccio (the away match will be played on Wednesday evening after the Turk’s victory for 3-0 in the home match).
FORMULA AND OTHER MATCHES 2017 CEV Cup is composed by six double rounds (home and round) of matches (thirty-two finals, sixteenth finals, eight finals, quarter finals, semifinals and finals) through direct elimination: the team that collects the greatest number of points, assigned as in the Championship, in the two rounds will pass to the next one: 3 for victory for 3-0 or 3-1, 2 for success in the tie break, 1 for defeat at the tie break (golden set until 15 in case of point tie). The other matches of the away round of the quarter finals (in brackets the result of the home match): this evening Tours Vb-Cez Karlovarsko (3-0); on Wednesday United Volleys Rheinmain-Lindemans Aalst (3-0) and Gfc Ajaccio-Fenerbahce Istanbul (0-3).
THE PRECEDENTS On Wednesday the 52nd match between the two teams will be played, the second one on an European level after 30 matches in regular season, 18 in the Championship’s Play Off (with three finals), 2 in Coppa Italia. The balance sheet is positive for 33-18 for Trentino Volley, who has also won two out three played matches in the current season; the most recent victory of the team from Emilia has been the match of 3-1 played on November 17th 2016. Piacenza hasn’t won at PalaTrento since May 17th 2009 (match 5 of the Championship’s final); after that 3-2, the Yellow-blue won 12 consecutive home matches. The Clubs faced each other in the quarter finals of a competition already two times: 2005 Championship Play Off (Piacenza’s victory in five matches) and 2016 Coppa Italia (success at the tie break of Trento).
THE REFEREES The match will be guided by Saadettin Deneri, first Turkish referee from Bursa, and the Turkish Marek Lagierski, second polish from Czeladz. Both will guide a match in which Trentino Volley is protagonist for the fist time.
