Trento, February 14th 2017
The home match of the eight finals of 2017 CEV Cup, the second most important continental competition for Clubs, will be played between today, tomorrow and Thursday evening. Trentino Diatec is going to play its second European home match of its season: on Wednesday February 15th at PalaTrento will arrive in fact the Finnish players of VaLePa Sastamala, already defeated in Finland two weeks ago. The match will begin at 8.30: live on Radio Dolomiti.
Here Diatec Trentino In order to continue its European path, the yellow-blue formation must win two sets; thanks to the promising success for 3-0 in the away match, it would be enough for the home team to outdistance the qualification to the next round. Beyond all and without forgiving the pitfalls that such a match inside and out could give, Trentino Diatec wants to win also to forget the defeat against Civitanova and arrive at the fundamental match of Sunday with an encouraging experience, that could possibly open in the best way the small cycle of three consecutive home matches (on Wednesday 22nd there is also the match against Molfetta).
“The match played two weeks ago in Finland has shown what we were expecting the day before and what we have noticed on screen – said coach Angelo Lorenzetti - ; Sastamala is a competitive team, good in reception and for this reason it has always been able to have high percentage in the side out phase. Therefore the result of the away match was important, but in order to pass the round we will have to stay focused in the home match because against this kind of opponents we have to”.
The Coach from Marche will be able to count on all the players and will decide only in the last moment what kind of formation will play on the field.
48th international match at PalaTrento On Wednesday evening, PalaTrento will host the 45th European home match of Trentino Volley’s history, the 20th in CEV Cup, in which it has won sixteenth times so far (only three defeats: two against Ankara in 2005 edition and one against Moscow in 2015). The Club of via Trener in this case will play the 696th official match of its history, the 131st international one (balance sheet: 109 victories and 21 defeats).
The opponents VaLePa will arrive this evening at Trento after having confirmed in the last weekend the second place in the ranking list in Mestaruusliiga, the maximum Finnish championship. The success at the tie break against Team Lakkapaa on Friday and the one reached after for 3-0 against Etta have in fact allowed the team of Sastamala (city of South Finland with about 25.000 inhabitants, located in the region of Pirkanmaa) to reach the second place that is only three points far from the first place occupied by Hurrikaani Loimaa, already defeated by Trento in the sixteens finals. In order to achieve the qualification in the quarter finals of Coppa CEV (best result so far in the Club’s history, gained last season), the team White-red will have to try to conquer PalaTrento for the first time during this season, at most four sets and win the next golden set, the only result the would allow it to continue its path at European level.
In the team, the Coach Sami Kurttila has at its disposal three players that have already played on the mondoflex of PalaTrento: the setter is Esko (in Italy already in Padova, Montichiari and Modena), the opposite Sivula (another ex Montichiari, Izmir and Berlin) and the spiker Kunnari, who played in it in 2010, when he was in Olympiacos Piraeus. He reached this round by defeating the Serbians of Nis in the thirty-two finals and the Danish of Gentofte in the sixteen finals. The team of VaLePa Sastamala: 1. Jacob Guymer (c), 2. Urpo Sivula (o), 3. Thomas Carmody (c), 4. Anssi Vesanen (c), 5. Timo Jokinen (s), 6. Joonas Oksala (c), 7. Mikko Esko (p), 8. Jesper Jylha (p), 9. Niko Karkkainen (s), 10. Jarmo Korhonen (l), 11. Peetu Makinen (s), 13. Olli Kunnari (s), 15. Jesus Danian (o). Coach Sami Kurttila.
Diatec Trentino qualified to the quarterfinals only if... To pass the turn the yellow-blue team needs to gain two set in the match of tomorrow evening; thanks to the victory for 3-0 in the going match, Lanza and his teammates could even lose the match at the tie break to avoid the possibility of a golden set versus Sastamala, which will be played only in case of a victory of the Finnish team up to four sets. The guidelines for the match will be identical to ones used in the Playoffs 12 phase of CEV Champions League. The team that will pass the turn will than play the winning team between Vojvodina NS Seme Bovi Sad (Srb) and Lpr Piacenza (the return match will be played on Wednesday evening after the victory of the team from Emilia for 3-0 in the going match).
The formula and other matches CEV Cup 2017 presents six double turns of matches (going and return matches) to be played (Round of sixty-four, Round of thirty-two, Round of sixteen, Quarterfinals, Semifinals and Finals) as knock-off matches: will pass the turn only the team that gain as many points as it can during the going and return matches, just like the league championship: 3 points for the victory for 3-0 or 3-1, 2 points for the victory at the tie break, 1 points for a loss at the tie break (golden set at 15 points in case of a draw). The other return matches of the round of thirty-two (in brackets the going match results): tonight Ces Karlovarsko – Gazprom Ugra Surgut (3-1) and Stella Rossa Belgrado – United Volleys Rheinmain (1-3); on Wednesday Tours Vb – Paok Thessaloniki (3-2), Lindemans Aalst – Arago de Sete (3-1) and Volley Amriswil – Gfc Ajaccio (1-3), Vojvodina Ns Seme Novi Sad – Lpr Piacenza (0-3); on Thursday Fenerbahce Instabul – Levski Sofia (3-0).
