Trento, 3rd January 2017

Thursday the 5th of January officially starts the road of Diatec Trentino in the 2017 CEV Cup with the first game of the round of thirthy-two in Loimaa (Finland).
Last year Trentino Volley takes part for the seventh time to the CEV Champions League (and won the silver medal), while this year will play in the European second most important club competition. The tournament, in which are taking part all the best teams who are not entered the Champions League, has different rules; there is not a group stage but only single matches based on an home and away game that will allow the winning team to advance to the next round.
In the edition of 2017, the preliminary turn (round of 32) has already taken place in December. This year a high number of countries will take part in the competition: 32 teams, which represents 20 different countries. Finland, Serbia and France have three teams  each; Greece, Israel, Czech Republic, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Bulgaria two each. There are also teams from countries in which Trentino Volley has never played before, even if it has already taken part in ten seasons of European cups, such us Bosnia-Herzegovina, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Montenegro and Denmark. Eight competing sport clubs have already won at least one European cup, for a total of twelve conquered trophies. Besides Trentino Volley, winner of three Champions League between 2009 and 2011, other teams have written their name in the Hall of Fame of the CEV cup: Fenerbahce Instanbul (that has won the Challenge Cup in 2014 beating Latina which was trained by Dario Simoni at that time), Novi Sad (Challenge Cup in 2015), Piacenza (Challenge cup in 2013 and Top Teams Cup in 2006), Tours (Champions League in 2005), Olympiacos Piraeus (Top Teams Cup in 2005 and Cup Winners’ Cup in 1996) and then, going back in time, CSKA Sofia (Cup Winners’ Cup in 1976) and Brno (Champions Cup in 1968). We should not forget that the Russian team, Surgut, will take part in the competition as vice-champions because they lost against Berlin, trained by  Roberto Serniotti, only in the final of 2016 CEV Cup. In the history of Trentino Volley, the participation in 2017 CEV Cup will be its 11th experience in a European Cup, the third in this specific competition. Before Diatec Trentino had played in this tournament in season 2004/05 (eliminated in the first knock-off round) and in season 2014/15 (second place, beaten by Dinamo Mosca).

TOURNAMENT PLANNING

Teams play six double turns (home and away game) of matches (round of 32, already played; round of sixteen, first knock-off round, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final). All of them are knock-out phases: the team that conquers the highest number of points after the two matches qualifies for the following round; points are given in the same way as a normal championship: 3 if the team wins the game 3-0 or 3-1; 2 if the team conquers the match at the tie break; 1 if it loses at the tie break (a 15-point golden set will be played if there is a tie – the same system as the Playoffs 12 of CEV Champions League).
