Trentino Itas-Olympiacos Piraeus 3-1, the match report

Report of the match. The starting six of the World Champions must do without Lisinac (which won’t be present) and fields Vettori in diagonal with Giannelli; Russell and Kovacevic as spikers, Codarin and Candellaro as middle-blockers, Grebennikov in the libero role. Olympiacos comes in Trento with the same seven players of the going match: Tervaportti as setter, Schmitt in the opposite role, Rauwerdink and Aleksiev as spikers, Boehme and Petreas as middle-blockers and Stefanou in the libero role. The hosts have a better first impact on the game (1-3, yellow-blue invasion fault) and keep it until 3-5 before the hosting team manages to get ahead with Vettori and Russell in attack and Candellaro at service (7-5).
Schmitt answers with an ace finding the gap on 10-10 and then the Greeks manages to run away on 10-12 (time out asked by Lorenzetti) also thanks to block of Tervaportti versus Kovacevic. Lorenzetti’s advices prove to be of main importance to clarify the ideas of the hosting team, which obtain a 4-0 break at the resumption of the game, inspired by Giannelli’s services and Kovacevic’s blocks and gets ahead again on 14-12. The second part of the set is finely managed by Trentino Itas which keeps gaining ground with Russell and Vettori (two aces) and quickly gets to 1-0 (25-19, ace of Giannelli).
The second set is very balanced with Trentino Itas that tries to escape (6-4 and 9-7) and Olympiacos that manages to keep the pace mostly thanks to Schmitt (11-10). Grebennikov’s defences, once again amazing, allow Itas Trentino to exploit of many break points chances. Then Vettori gets on fire in attack (18-14) and then Candellaro at service (23-16); the qualification arrives on 25-19 (Codarin’s attack).
Lorenzetti offers space to the others players of the roster after having obtained the qualification and fields Daldello as setter, Nelli in the opposite role, Van Garderen and Cavuto as spikers. Munoz Benitez keeps its starting six on the field. The host immediately gets ahead (5-7, 7-9) and keep getting advantage (10-15, 11-17) making the most of the situation. Schmitt and Aleksiev are unstoppable, Trento makes a lot of fauls and Olympiakos easily get to 2-1 (17-25) helped by the yellow-blues, who struggle to find the right pace.
Trentino Itas starts playing with a good attitude after the change of field led by Nelli and Candellaro and gets to 5-3 and then 8-5. Olympiacos, which enters the field with many new players, seems not to have strength enough to fight (13-9 and 15-10) also because the side-out phase of the World Champions is very effective (19-13 and 21-14). The final 3-1 comes on 25-17 with Cavuto in attack and De Angelis in reception.
