SuperLega, the challenge at the top smiles on Perugia

The top clash in the penultimate round of the SuperLega Credem Banca 2023/24 regular season smiles on home team Sir Susa Vim Perugia, forcing Itas Trentino to deal with its second defeat in the championship. This evening, the Italian champions gave way 1-3 to the hosts, who, spurred on by the almost 5,000 spectators present at PalaBarton, managed to interrupt the yellow-blue’s streak of eleven consecutive victories, which had lasted since 10 December (knockout in Modena).
The four-set setback, irrelevant in terms of the classification (already won by Trento with two rounds in advance), nevertheless offered important signs of pugnacity from the yellow-blue team, who, Despite having to do without their starting opposite number Rychlicki (excellently replaced by Nelli - the team's best scorer with 16 points and 56% at the net, with a block and an ace), they contested the opening set to the end, held their own in the second set, and won the third set (which they always led) thanks in part to Lavia's fine performance (14 points with 48%). In the fourth set, also in anticipation of the imminent return match of the Champions League quarter-finals (Thursday in Trento with Berlin), coach Fabio Soli gave space to all the players. In spite of the 17-25 final, Cavuto and Magalini proved to be valid alternatives to the starting place-4 pair.
Today's round allowed Itas Trentino to know with certainty the opponent to challenge in the quarter-finals of the Play Off Scudetto, which will start on Wednesday 6 March. The defence of the title won last 17 May 2023 will begin with a best-of-five match against Modena in the first round of the final draw, as had already happened in the years 2003, 2006, 2008 and 2014.
