Play Off, on Sunday back on court at the ilT quotidiano Arena for game 3 of the quarter

Game 3 of the quarter-finals of the Play Off Scudetto SuperLega Credem Banca 2024 will be played on Sunday, March 17 at the ilT quotidiano Arena in Trento. After the midweek interlude dedicated to the Champions League, Itas Trentino will be back in front of their home crowd to try and close the account in the first of three match balls available with Valsa Group Modena, being ahead 2-0 in the series that spans five confrontations. Kick-off is scheduled for 5 pm: live broadcast on Radio Dolomiti and streaming live on the OTT Volleyball World Tv platform.
HERE ITAS TRENTINO Seven days after the precious and very important victory in game 2 at the PalaPanini, the Italian champions take on Modena again in search of a result that could guarantee access to the sixteenth final in the history of Trentino Volley.
"The first two challenges presented very different trends and scenarios, even if only looking at the individual sets played - emphasised coach Fabio Soli while presenting the appointment - , which is why we can assume that this match will still hold something different in store. Being ahead 2-0 against a constantly growing team like Modena is certainly a merit, but no one is under any illusion that the decisive step to pass the round has already been taken. We need another victory and that is what we will look for with the humility and the will to fight that we have already shown in the previous two challenges, improving our performance under the aspect of consistency, especially in those fundamentals where we still have the possibility to grow".
Trento’s coach will only have to do without starting setter Riccardo Sbertoli and will complete his preparation for the match with training sessions this afternoon and Sunday morning at the ilT quotidiano Arena. On this occasion, Gabriele Nelli could pick up his 200th token in seven seasons as a first-team player in Trento; he is the player on the current roster with the most, ahead of Michieletto (187) and Podrascanin (175). Game 3 will be the 37th match of the Gialloblù season, the 19th home match.
TEN WINS AND THREE DEFEATS IN THE PREVIOUS THIRTEEN ‘GAME 3’ OF THE QUARTERFINALS In the previous twenty participations in the Play Off Scudetto Trentino Volley has already played thirteen times a game 3 of the quarterfinals, taking ten wins and three defeats. The victories came in 2003 and 2006 (3-2 over Modena), in 2009 (3-2 over Vibo), 2010 (3-0 over Verona), 2011 (3-0 over San Giustino), 2016 (3-0 over Molfetta), 2018 (3-0 over Verona), 2020 (3-0 over Padova), 2022 (3-0 over Piacenza) and 2023 (3-1 over Monza), while the defeats came in 2003 (0-3 over Perugia), 2004 (1-3 with Piacenza) and 2007 (2-3 with Cuneo). Sunday's match for the club from via Trener will be the 149th ever in the Play Offs (tally: 88 wins and 60 losses), the 74th at the ilT quotidiano Arena where they have not lost in the quarter-finals at home for ten years (27 March 2014 0-3, against Modena in game 1).
THE OPPONENTS Valsa Group Modena returns to Trento eleven days after game 1 with the strict need to win to keep the quarter-final series open and avoid the second consecutive elimination in the quarter-finals. In order to gain access to the Play Off semifinals (a goal they have already reached twenty-eight times in the past), Alberto Giuliani's team, who this week renewed his contract for another two seasons, will once again rely on the attacking verve of Davyskiba (41 points in the first two games, current best scorer in the series), the class and experience of Juantorena, Stankovic and Bruno (who know the Play Off atmosphere very well), but also the desire to assert themselves of young Sanguinetti, Gollini and Rinaldi, home-grown talents.
PREVIOUS MATCHES With eighty-six official matches already in the archives, Modena is the second opponent Trentino Volley has faced the most times (the first is Lube with 98 previous matches); the tally is in favour of the Club of via Trener: 51-35, but in the current season the Emilians have won one of the four matches played (3-1 at the PalaPanini on 10 December), although they have always lost in Trento (double 3-0 between 18 February and 6 March). This is the fifth quarter-final match in the history of the Play Off Scudetto quarter-finals; the previous ones were played in 2003 (when the Emilians won in five games), 2006 (2-1 for Trento), 2008 (2-0 for Trento) and 2014 (2-0 for Modena); in the Play Off the two clubs have also played in a Final (2015 edition, won by Trento) and two semi-finals (2011 and 2016 editions - one win each). A total of 27 matches were played in the final table, with 15 victories for Trento. The home court factor has been respected in twenty-six of the thirty-six previous ‘A22 derbies’ played in Trento; the most recent external success is dated 6 February 2022, in a tie break.
THE SERIES Itas Trentino is 2-0 ahead of Valsa Group Modena in the quarter-final series of the SuperLega Credem Banca 2024 Scudetto Play Off quarter-final, which is being played in the best-of-five games, by virtue of the 3-0 win in game 1 at the ilT quotidiano Arena (25-23, 25-18, 25-18) on 6 March and the 3-2 away win four days later (25-22, 26-28, 15-25, 25-19, 15-13). Only if the Emilians win Sunday's match will the two teams return to PalaPanini for game 4, to be played on Sunday 24 at 6 p.m. (time to be confirmed). Game 5, should it be necessary, is instead scheduled for Wednesday 27 at 8.30 p.m., again in Trento. Whoever gets through the round will find in the semifinals the winner of Civitanova-Monza, series on 0-2 (game 2 on Sunday in Marche). The other two quarter-finals at the top of the table are Perugia-Verona (2-0) and Piacenza-Milan (1-1).
THE REFEREES The direction of game 3 will be entrusted to Dominga Lot (from Santa Lucia di Piave - Treviso, in Serie A since 2010 and international since 2017) and Rocco Brancati (from Città di Castello - Perugia, in Serie A since 2015), respectively in their 17th and 12th matches of the season. The last encounter with Trentino Volley for Lot was in the 1-3 home loss to Padova (3 March), while Brancati returns to referee the yellow-blue team after the three-set home win over Milano on 24 January.
