2025 CEV Cup, Trentino Itas secures victory in Lisbon in the first leg of the round of 16

The first match in its nearly 25-year history on Portuguese soil gave Trentino Volley the result it needed to approach its immediate future (the Club World Championship in Brazil and the second leg in Sardinia) with confidence and high ambitions. This evening in Lisbon, the reigning European Champions claimed a decisive 3-0 victory against hosts Sport Lisboa e Benfica in the first leg of the 2025 CEV Cup Round of 16, taking a significant step towards qualifying for the next stage.
To complete their mission, the gialloblù need only win two sets in the return match, scheduled at PalaPirastu in Cagliari on Thursday, December 19. Trentino Itas earned this critical advantage over the two-leg series with a solid, mistake-free performance, showcasing their ability to approach the match with the right mindset while quickly bouncing back from Sunday night’s defeat in Civitanova Marche.                               Key factors in the victory included a sharp serving game from the outset, high-quality high-ball attacks, and an improving block that delivered seven points in the third set alone. These tools helped neutralize the hosts’ attempts to stay competitive. In every set, Trentino Itas started stronger than Benfica and managed to hold off their comebacks, leveraging stellar performances from Michieletto in the first set (five of his 12 points came in this period), Rychlicki in the second (six points), and Flavio in the third. The Brazilian middle blocker was the standout player, contributing seven winning points in the final set, including three blocks (and four total in the match). Lavia also reached double digits, scoring ten crucial points at pivotal moments.
