Club World Champs: Trentino Itas ends the first phase with a meaningless defeat

Trentino Itas wrapped up the first phase of the 2024 World Club Championship in Brazil with a meaningless defeat against South American champions Sada Cruzeiro. In the Italian night, the yellow-blue team, fielding a decidedly experimental lineup, completed its journey in Pool B, narrowly losing in a tie-break at the Arena Sabiazinho to the continent's best team.
Having already secured qualification for Saturday's semifinals as the top team in their group twenty-four hours prior, the European champions approached this match with an unprecedented lineup. This allowed players such as Sbertoli, Michieletto, and Lavia to rest ahead of the tournament's final stretch. Despite this, they maintained their fighting spirit and determination, allowing Soli's team to take leads of 1-0 and then 2-1 before succumbing to a comeback from the Brazilians, who needed to win to keep their hopes alive for a spot in the Final Four. Key performances came from Acquarone (brilliant evening as setter), Magalini (19 points with 65% attack efficiency and two blocks), Bristot (10 points with two aces), and both opposites Rychlicki (18 winning balls with 58% efficiency and four blocks in two and a half sets) and Gabi Garcia (10 points with 71%), who were alternated on the court throughout the five sets. With their backs against the wall, Sada found greater consistency starting from the fourth set but had to fight until the end, relying on their loud home crowd for support to turn the match.
