SuperLega, on Sunday in Umbria the top of the table clash

The sixteenth round of the regular season in the 2024/25 SuperLega Credem Banca will be played this weekend. On Sunday, January 12, Itas Trentino will face Sir Susa Vim Perugia at the PalaBarton for a top-of-the-table clash. The match will start at 6:00 PM, with live coverage on RAI Sport, Radio Dolomiti, and live streaming on the OTT platform "VBTV".
THE LAST NEWS ABOUT ITAS TRENTINO The yellow-and-blue team is preparing for its toughest away match of the season, coming off three consecutive three-point victories in the league and aiming for a result that could bring them closer to the top of the standings, which is currently held by the Umbrian team, with a five-point lead and one game played more.
"The match against Perugia represents an opportunity for us to test our volleyball and physical condition against a team that is currently proving, through both results and statistics, to be the benchmark in Italian volleyball, and not only," explained coach Fabio Soli during the pre-match presentation. "The qualities of our opponents and the support of the Perugia crowd will make this game full of high-level technical and environmental elements, offering us the chance to perform in an extremely challenging atmosphere. We will need to bring our best and use our strengths to compete on equal terms and aim to achieve the best possible outcome in this thrilling clash."
The yellow-and-blue coach will only be missing Kozamernik, who will stay in Trento; the rest of the team has been training regularly at the ilT Arena this morning before heading to Perugia, which will be the first stop in two consecutive away matches over the next five days. After the PalaBarton game, the team will travel directly to Brașov (Romania) for the first leg of the 2025 CEV Cup Playoffs on Wednesday. This will be Trentino Volley’s 27th official match of the season, the 1,071st in total, and they will be aiming for their 433rd regular season win in the club’s history. Statistics show that the Trentino club has already faced Sir Perugia seven times in January, winning six of those encounters, one of which was at PalaBarton (3-1 on January 3, 2021).
THE OPPONENTS Boasting an unbeaten record this season, recently confirmed by a three-set win in Cisterna, and a streak of 23 consecutive victories since April 21, 2024 (the last loss, a tie-break defeat in Monza), Sir Susa Vim Perugia will look to extend their strong form and solidify their position at the top of the standings, which they have held since the fifth round when they beat Trento in four sets during the first half of the season. With five consecutive trophies in their cabinet (the most recent being the 2024 Supercup in Florence, where they defeated Trentino in the final), Angelo Lorenzetti's team has proven to be the best in the league, excelling in key break-point fundamentals: blocking (140 total, averaging 2.41 per set) and serving (129 total, averaging 2.22 per set). Additionally, Oleh Plotnytskyi is having an outstanding individual season (currently the top scorer of the tournament and second in overall hitting efficiency), almost overshadowing the arrival of Japanese star Ishikawa in Umbria. Besides coach Lorenzetti (who had 337 appearances on Trentino’s bench from 2016 to 2023), there are four former Trentino players involved in the match: setter Simone Giannelli (315 official matches between 2014 and 2021 and 131 times as captain), middle blockers Sebastian Solé (189 matches from 2013 to 2017) and Davide Candellaro (81 matches from 2018 to 2020), and libero Massimo Colaci (345 matches from 2010 to 2017).
THE PREVIOUS MATCHES There have been 56 official matches between Trentino Volley and Sir Perugia, with the head-to-head record favoring the Umbrians at 32-24, thanks in part to nine victories in the last ten matches played. Trento's most recent victory was on December 17, 2023 (3-1 at ilT Arena, led by Michieletto); after that win, the team has suffered three consecutive defeats, including both games already played this season: a tie-break loss in Florence on September 22 in the Supercoppa final and a 3-1 defeat at Trento on October 27 in the first round of the regular season. The player who has played the most matches between Trento and Perugia is Simone Giannelli: 34 with the yellow-and-blue and 16 with the Umbrians (a total of 50). This count does not include the first-leg match, where the Italian National Team captain was sidelined due to injury. Overall, Trentino has won six out of the 20 previous encounters played at PalaBarton, the last one being on February 25, 2024 (a 1-3 defeat in the penultimate round of the regular season).
THE REFEREES The match will be officiated by Dominga Lot from Santa Lucia di Piave (Treviso) and Alessandro Cerra from Bologna, both refereeing their third joint SuperLega match in their careers. Both referees have prior experience in the Trentino-Perugia clash: Lot has officiated two times (3-1 win for Trentino at home on December 17, 2023, and 3-0 win for Trentino at home on January 5, 2019), while Cerra has officiated once (a 3-1 home win for Perugia on November 20, 2022). Lot has already officiated Itas Trentino this season in their 3-0 home win over Milano on December 26, while Cerra refereed Trentino’s only away defeat this season, a 1-3 loss in Civitanova on December 1.
