Marcelo Méndez new Trentino Volley Head Coach

An international profile, backed by extensive experience and, at the same time, great enthusiasm for what will be his debut in the Italian SuperLega: these are the reasons why Trentino Volley has chosen Marcelo Méndez as the new coach of the reigning Italian champions.
A 61-year-old Argentine, originally from Buenos Aires but also holding an Italian passport, he has signed a two-year contract with the club based on Via del Brennero, lasting until June 2027. He arrives in Trento after an impactful four-year stint in Poland, coaching both Resovia and Jastrzębski, ready to embark on a new technical journey aimed at helping the team reach the next level. Marcelo Méndez will bring with him a wealth of volleyball knowledge gathered over forty years of coaching, during which he also led two national teams (Spain and Argentina—with whom he will compete in the World Championship this summer before focusing solely on Itas Trentino) and top clubs in Brazil (Monteclaros and Sada), Poland, and Spain. His impressive résumé includes 37 club titles and four medals with Argentina’s national team, including the bronze at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
“We are truly delighted to welcome a coach of great renown and skill like Marcelo Méndez to Trentino Volley,” said President Marcello Poli. “He accepted our offer with enthusiasm, ready to lead the team and help this group continue to grow and compete for victory in every competition it takes part in. Marcelo is a true volleyball master, bringing with him all the knowledge and experience gained over many years of an international career. In the conversations I’ve had with him in recent weeks, I’ve discovered a very determined and inquisitive person, who clearly recognizes the value of the squad he’ll have at his disposal.”
“I’m truly happy to become the coach of Itas Trentino and to lead the reigning Italian champions,” were Marcelo Méndez’s first words. “I’m joining a great club, which has consistently demonstrated strong organizational and managerial skills, as well as an instinct for building highly competitive rosters. Taking my seat on the Trentino bench marks a new personal challenge, as I’ve never before had the opportunity to coach in the top Italian league. I’ll be doing it with Trentino Volley, the team that wears the championship badge on its jersey; I’ll work every day to make sure it stays there. Players and staff alike have spoken very highly of this club, and I can’t wait to get started and contribute. I’ll apply my own vision of volleyball, fully aware that we’re building on a solid foundation. The squad I’ll be working with is rich in talent and excels in teamwork, as shown by the high-level coordination between blocking and defense. Fortunately, there is still room for improvement—I firmly believe we can make another leap forward, particularly in the fundamentals of attacking and serving, which I’d like to make even more incisive and aggressive.”
Méndez is the ninth head coach of Trentino Volley’s men’s team, and the third foreigner to take the role. To see him in action in Trento, fans will have to wait until the second half of September, once he concludes his journey with the Argentine national team at the 2025 World Championship in the Philippines.
