Trento, 30 June 2025

SuperLega, a new high-profile addition to the center of the net: Simon Torwie

The month of June brings another key signing to the reigning Italian Champions' men's team, as Itas Trentino continues to strengthen its middle blocker lineup. Following the recent announcement of young prospect Sandu, the position 3 department gains another physically gifted and already high-level talent: Simon Valentin Torwie from Germany.
Born in 2001, standing at 208 cm tall, and turning 24 this November, Torwie is considered one of the most promising middle blockers on the international scene. His outstanding performances with the German national team in the 2025 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) have only reinforced that view. Under the guidance of head coach Michal Winiarski, he has already scored 60 points across the first eight matches of the tournament — including 22 blocks, 7 aces, and a 51% attack efficiency.
Despite his young age, Simon Torwie already boasts solid international experience. Born in Palma de Mallorca, Spain, where his parents were working at the time and where he took his first steps in volleyball, he moved to Germany at the age of 16, staying in Frankfurt until 2020. He then moved to the United States to attend Long Beach State University — a school renowned for producing top players such as Ctvrtlik, Lee, and DeFalco — and competed in the NCAA Championship for four seasons. In 2024, he returned to Europe to join SVG Lüneburg in the German Bundesliga, where he was coached by former Trentino player Stefan Hübner. During the 2024/25 season, he took part in the CEV Champions League, tallying 93 points, with a 56% success rate in quick attacks, 28 blocks, and 13 aces over 10 matches.
It was during one of those Champions League matches — against Jastrzębski Węgiel — that Marcelo Méndez, future head coach of Trentino Volley, took notice of him and recommended his signing.
"I'm thrilled to finally get the chance to play in the Italian SuperLega, and to do it with the reigning champions," said Simon Torwie. "From afar, I've always followed this league closely — I consider it the most competitive and exciting in the world — and I'm enthusiastic to now experience it firsthand. Trentino Volley is one of the top volleyball clubs globally, and joining this team is the most important step of my career so far. While I was at Lüneburg, I spoke with Stefan Hübner about Trento, and he made it clear that I’d be joining a fantastic club — extremely well-organized and always supportive of its players. He also spoke very highly of the city and the entire atmosphere around the team."
"Torwie is a player with great physical and technical potential," added head coach Marcelo Méndez. "Even though he’s still young, he has gained a lot of international experience — having played in Spain, the NCAA in the USA, the Champions League, and recently in the VNL with Germany. He’s already a standout blocker, and I’m convinced he will become an even more complete player here in Trento — a top-level middle blocker in every aspect."
Torwie has signed a two-year contract, will wear jersey number 33 (a number never previously worn in Trentino), and becomes the fifth German player in Trentino Volley history, following in the footsteps of Hübner, Walter, Backmann, and Zenger.
