MINAS TENIS CLUBE (Brazil, match on Wednesday October 19th at 9.30 p.m. Italian time)
It ‘s a club of Belo Horizonte, organizer of the event and one of the main sports club in the country, specialized not only in volleyball (both for women and for men), but also in basketball, five-a-side football, swimming, judo and, as we can understand from its name, tennis. Volleyball is one of the most important sectors, if we consider that Minas has been competing at high levels in this sports discipline since the 1970s. Only few teams have always participated in the Brazilian Men’s Volleyball SuperLiga since the creation of the championship (1994/95 season) and Minas is one of them. It won 7 national titles (no other club has won so many as Minas), but the latest dates back to the 2006/2007 tournament. From that moment on, other teams from San paolo, Rio de Janeiro and in particular their “cousins” of the Sada Cruzeiro (winner of the last 4 titles, in Pool A of the Club World Championship 2016) have dominated the scenes. At international level, Minas won two consecutive South American championships (in 1984 and 1985). Moreover, there have been important players in the past that have played in the half-field of Minas, such as the setter El Garten, the hitter Lucarelli and the middle hitter Henrique. At the moment, the most outstanding players in the team, trained by the coach Nery Tambeiro, are the Cuban opposite hitter Bisset, the promising Brazilian hitter Bruno Canuto, the setter Gelinski, and the hitter Fuchs who have already gained experience on the field (he already plays in the National Volleyball team).
BOLIVAR (Argentina, match on October 20th at 9 p.m. Italian time)
The Club Ciudad de Bolivar was established only in 2002, but despite this it won six national titles (the last four consecutively from 2006 to 2010), five ACLAV trophies (the Argentinian Volleyball League) and a South American championship. It has already competed for the edition 2010 of the Club World Championship, the second ever played in Doha, and it finished fourth after confronting Trentino Volley at the stage group, losing 3-1 on December 17th 2010. In that team there were also the setter De Cecco, now playing in Perugia, and the middle hitter Solé, who was taken on in the summer 2013 by Trento in order to become a strong point. The team, that like the other three of the Pool B got the invitation to take part by the Fivb, will be guided once again by Javier Weber (already coach of the Seleccion and on the team’s bench for nearly two lustrums) and it could count on several old acquaintances for the Italian volleyball, like the Australian opposite Edgar (former Perugia), the outside hitters Aleksiev (former Corigliano) and Jacobsen (former Pineto and Crema) and the middle hitter of the National team Crer (former Vibo). The other important names are the former Friedrichschafen Gauna (in zone 3), the libero Gonzalez (at Rio 2016 with Solé), the setter Chirivino and the spikers Ocampo and Patti.
UPCN SAN JUAN (Argentina, match on Saturday October 22nd at 12 p.m. Italian time)
Among the strongest teams in South America this club has a very recent history: it was first established in 2007. In 9 years it has immediately collected great results: the most important have been the third place in the Club World Championship 2014 (this will be its third participation in this competition) and the two victories of the South America Championship 2013 and 2015 (nearly won also in 2012). These achievements have given the club a lot of prestige, and this convinced FIVB to grant the team a wild card for the 2016 edition of the international event of Betim. In the list of the team successes there are also six national titles (all won between 2011 and 2016) and three Argentinian Cups. Last season it got its third double championship-cup, in both cases winning in final against Bolivar. The team trainer is always Fabian Armoa who has a lot of players with many years of international experience at his disposal: the most known are the Italian setter Vermiglio, the middle blocker of the national team Ramo, the expert hitters Filardi and Scholtis, the libero Garroncq and above all the Bulgarian opposite Uchikov, who played in Trento during the 2012/13 season for a total of 28 appearances and 83 points winning 3 titles: Italian Championship, Italian Cup and Club World Championship.
UPCN San Juan played 3 official matches against Trentino Volley, all of them in this competition: 2 in the 2013 edition in Betim (defeat in tiebreaker for Lanza and team-mates on October 17th and 3-1 victory in the bronze medal game three days later) and one in the pool stage of the 2014 edition (3-2 victory on May 7th).
