2025 CEV Cup in the playoffs, a challenge against the romanian champions of Corona Brașov

Qualification for the 2025 CEV Cup Playoffs, achieved tonight in Cagliari, has allowed Trentino Volley to secure a spot among the top twelve teams in the competition. The next step toward advancing to the quarterfinals will once again be against a Romanian team, as it was in November against C.S. Arcada Galați in the Round of 16.
In the fourth stage of the final bracket (which, up until the final, consists of two-legged knockout ties), Trentino Itas will face the Romanian Champions of Corona Brașov, who, like the yellow-blues, also qualified by eliminating the Estonian team Selver x Taltech Tallinn with two 3-0 victories. The first leg will be played away between January 14-16, 2025, with the return leg in Trento between January 28-30, 2025. The exact dates and times will be confirmed once the clubs, their respective national federations, and the CEV coordinate.
As in the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals, the team that earns the most points across both matches will advance. Points are awarded according to the same system as the SuperLega: 3 points for a 3-0 or 3-1 win, 2 points for a 3-2 victory, and 1 point for a 2-3 loss. A golden set (a tiebreaker set played to 15 points after the second match) will only take place in case of a points tie.
About CSM Corona Brașov
Corona Brașov is based in the city of Brașov, located in central Romania in the Transylvania region, with a population of over 230,000. The club is part of a multisport organization that also includes football, handball, and hockey teams.
The volleyball section is very recent, having been established in 2022, and has already achieved great success: promotion to Romania's top league in 2023 and winning the national title in 2024, defeating Galați. For this reason, they were entered into the Champions League preliminary rounds this season, narrowly missing out on the group stage after eliminating Bosnia’s Ok Radnik Bijeljina in the first round, Switzerland’s Schönenwerd in the second, and being stopped by Greece’s Olympiacos. Relegated to the 2025 CEV Cup, they advanced past the Round of 16 by defeating Serbia’s Novi Sad and Estonia’s Tallinn in the quarterfinals.
The roster of coach Laurentiu Lica (a former high-level opposite with experience in the French league) includes Argentine setter Arquez, Azerbaijani opposite Melnikov, Dutch outside hitter Gommans, Australian outside hitter Butler, Serbian outside hitters Kovacevic and Stojsavljević, Serbian middle blockers Magdas and Lupu, and libero Kantor, the only three local players in the starting lineup. In the Romanian top league, the team is currently in third place behind Craiova (who Trentino Volley faced in the 2015 CEV Cup) and Dinamo Bucharest (former team of Bela Bartha), with 25 points and 8 wins in 11 matches.
