Trento, January 17th 2018
After a month off, 2018 CEV Volleyball Champions League is starting again. Tomorrow night. On Thursday January 18th the last day of the Main Phase's first round of the most improtant competition for clubs will take place in PalaTrento. After two away matches Trentino Diatec is starting this season in PalaTrento, against the Turkish team Arkas Izmir, last team in the ranking of Pool E. The match is starting at 8:30. It will be broadcast live on Fox Sports, Radio Dolomiti and it will be on live streaming (audio and video) on the site www.laola1.tv.
HERE DIATEC TRENTINO The fourth match in the home field of 2018 could represent an international overturn for the yellow-blues, who will face the second best team of Turkey, after having faced Padova, Ravenna and Civitanova, and Trento really needs to win. After they lost in Poland on December 20th (first match of CEV Champions League of this season), Lanza and his team can't afford to lose even more positions in the group ranking in comparison with Zaksa. The first considered factor in the ranking, indeed, is the number of won matches, not the points, and that is one more reason why Trentino Volley really can't lose if they want to try and get at least the second position.
“It is a very important match as far as it concerns the qualification to the Playoffs 12- said the coach Angelo Lorenzetti- Izmir has a very tidy game and it is really competitive, most of all during the break point phase. So we will need to demonstrate that we can be patient, also by a mental point of view, when we're not able to have continuity during the side-out phase”.
Diatec Trentino's coach will still have to do without the libero De Pandis (Chiappa is taking his place) and he will also have to evaluate Nicholas Hoag's conditions, who really doesn't want to miss the match against his father Glenn (Izmir's coach), but who is still suffering form a contusion in the right shoulder that kept him from playing last Sunday against Civitanova.
This will be the 140th match ever for Trentino Volley, the 107th at an European level and the 77th in Champions League.
CHAMPIONS LEAGUE WILL BE BACK IN PALATRENTO AFTER 672 DAYS OF ABSENCE After twenty-two months waiting, PalaTrento is hosting again a CEV Champions League match. Last time it happened was on March 17th 2016, during the first Playoffs 12 round, and they won 3-0 against the Russian team Belgorod. The appointment will coincide with the 48th European match in the home field for Trentino Volley, the 33rd in Champions League (out of which they won 29 times): they only lost three times, against the Olympiacos on Januray 20th 2010 during the tie-break, against Kedzierzyn-Kozle on December 14th 2011 during the tie-break, and against Belgorod on February 12th 2014, match that was lost 0-3. The last time they played in continent was on April 12th 2017: the match won 3-0 against Tours during the first match of the final of 2017 CEV Cup.
THE OPPONENTS Arkas Izmir is arriving at PalaTrento looking for the first victory of the season in CEV Champions League. Glenn Hoag's team (the coach has been training the team for 7 years now) is at the last position in the ranking of Pool E, after they lost in the home field against Zaksa and then lost 3-2 in Maaseik just before Christmas. It is the seventh time this team participates in a continental tournament. The white-blues conquered the participation in the tournament by classifying at second position in the national championship 2016/2017, which conformed the supremacy of Arkas as main opponent of Istanbul and Ankara's teams. Arkas Izmir won two Turkish pennants, two national cups and the Challenge Cup 2009, which they won by defeating Jastrzebski Wegiel in the home field during the tie-break.
The best result they obtained in Champions League was the fourth position in 2012 in the Final Four of Lodz. The most important players of their shortlist are the Serbian setter Jovovic, the German spiker Fromm (both of them coming from Monza), the Cuban opposite hitter Sanchez Bozhulev, but also the Brasilan Bravo (who has been training in the past in Piacenza by Lorenzetti), but until now they haven't given the team great results. Arkas is at fourth position in the Turkish championship, having 7 points less than the first team Ziraat. On Saturday the team lost a match in the national championship (the fourth time in regular season) against Maliye Piyango Ankara (1-3). Arkas Izmir’s pink: 1. Christian Fromm (s), 2. Trentino Diatec (4 points) and Noliko Maaseik (2 points) chase with a success, while the Arkas Izmir is still at the pole despite having collected a point. Tonight at 20.30 in Poland is played right the match between the hosts and the Belgians; in the next round (scheduled for Tuesday, January 30th and Thursday, February 1st) the same challenges will be played but in reversed fields.
